War
biggest & best ??
Exaggerated and bombastic claims are one of the things Donald Trump excels at. He has done it his entire career. But his very loyal Secretary of Defense may have gone even further than his boss with this one.
The facts do support claims of it being the first of it’s kind, use of ordnance & technology that no other country has (that we are aware of) and being accomplished with no US casualties. It required the coordination of multiple moving parts and highly trained personnel. From a military history perspective that’s impressive on it’s own.
But “most complex and secretive military operation in history…”that’s a pretty bold claim, for a bombing op that occurred in one day, with tested weapons from our inventory and less than 200 delivery and support vehicles. Let’s be VERY clear, neither Trump nor Hegseth had anything to do with the development of the weapons, the testing, the funding or anything that made all of this technology available to them. They had nothing to do with the enlistment or training of any of the pilots, the sailors, the support people, the selection or funding of the contractors or making any of this operation “Midnight Hammer” possible. All of the parts and personnel existed for them to use as they pleased.
Creating the technology, the weapons and the systems needed was all accomplished during the administrations of George W Bush and Barrack Obama. Starting in 2003-2004.
Two Presidents that Trump believes are stupid and that he owes nothing to. Not to mention the generals and Secretaries of Defense serving during those administrations. According to Hegseth they all knew nothing about war and had degraded our capabilities…so I’m surprised that he and Trump trusted these weapons and systems. There may have been some DEI involved.
You would think that the current Secretary of Defense would be aware of how complex and secretive the D-Day operation in France was in June 1944. FDR had to build the shipyards, to build the ships and the plants to build the tanks, planes, etc. Hire and train the workforce…Enlist the troops, train the troops, stage the troops and move them into position without Hitler being ready for them.
The ability for the US to even attempt D-Day took 3 years and many thousands of soldiers, technicians, military and civilian support people. The co-ordinated planing and politics, went far, far beyond what Trump unleashed last week. Can you imagine Trump doing anything in secret for 3 years ?
I could cite many more examples of detailed planing, complex logistics and the need for extended secrecy. Pearl Harbor was pretty complex and secret.
Time will tell how effective “Midnight Hammer” was. Totally shutting down Iran’s nuclear bomb production and bringing peace to the Mid-East was a pretty grand goal for one military operation on one night.
D-Day was a success, but it did not achieve the final goal in one day. It took a year of relentless, focused and co-ordinated attacks on many fronts to get to V-E Day. As successful as Pearl Harbor was for the Japanese initially, we were able to turn that tide with a VERY secret mission that required years of complex co-ordination, testing and execution. It’s probably a good thing that we didn’t have texting, signal and 24 hour “news”….and we had political leaders and generals who were in it for the long haul and working to preserve democracy…not make bombastic claims.

Mike,
Good assessment - especially for those who remember our history and a time when military planning was done privately - not on a phone with the world listening. $Trump and Hegseth are taking Conway's "alternative facts" to new levels. It is raining bullshit and bombasity in America. What a cleanup ahead.
Some days I am horrified. Some days numb. Some days embarrassed and disgusted. Some days really pissed off. Some days astounded. And always incredulous that more than 100 people actually believe the obvious lies.
And maybe worst of all, I am constantly amazed that more than 100 people actually like this monster. My question for them would be: "How would you feel if your teenage daughter was in a room alone with him ("it")?
Right on all points, Mike. The hubris, the effrontery, the ignorance - but what else did we expect?
