In this day and age when Republican “leaders” don’t lead…they capitulate and hide, I believe that one who did lead deserves much more attention than he gets. On July 23, 1885 Grant died at age 63. Just 140 years ago yesterday. I have not seen one mention of him in any national media.
Without Grant and his ability as a General, I’m not sure that the Civil War would have ended the way that it did. He was responsible for the victory at Vicksburg, during the same week as Gettysburg in 1863, which gave the Mississippi back to the US.
Lincoln saw his ability and brought him east…and together they planned the next phase of the war. Grant understood how to defeat Lee and bring the war to an end. He was the only US General who engaged Lee and would not let go…would not fall back and take time to regroup.
He just kept at it until the deed was done.
His mounted statue sits directly in front of the Capitol. I’m sure he could not believe the sight of confederate battle flags around him on J6.
So, on this day after the anniversary of his passing, I just wanted to thank him for a job well done…and being a great American hero.
For those who love to learn about such figures as Grant, Ron Chernow's book is full of fascinating details of history and it's personalities. Highly recommend.
Here is an alcoholic general who is plagued with debilitating headaches - and is a genius in his pursuit of victory.
As you indicate, Grant is underappreciated and often misunderstood.
