I remember watching the 1940 movie Santa Fe Trail when I was a kid. Besides being totally historically inaccurate, it also depicted John Brown as a mad man who was basically responsible for the Civil War. As I have grown older and realize what BS those old movies were, I see Brown as someone who should be recognized as a true American hero. More so than Abraham Lincoln.
Brown certainly had the right idea about no human being should be enslaved. His "battle plan" at Harpers Ferry was overly optimistic in his odds to be successful, given the resources he had available. I'm currently working to document an historical musical by Gene Bruskin titled "The Return of John Brown." He staged a reading of it at the Kennedy Farm which is now known as John Brown's Raid HQ. I'll write more about that in the near future.
