Good question Mike. My sense of this is that we have become too comfortable. It is true that there are a lot of people suffering. But the great mass of Americans doesn't have to get off their couch to watch a movie (the catalog is endless). They don't need to talk to anyone in person - the entire universe is held within a thing about the size of a pack of cigarettes.
So who would "protest songs" appeal to? The masses are drugged with tech that can entertain them and distract them until they expire on that couch. And if they do get upset about something (like I am now!!!) they can vent their spleens with their little thumbs at a forum of like minded couchers.
What's the answer? I fear things will have to get worse...much worse, before the masses rise up and try to restore dignity, decency and democracy to the US. Maybe it will take floods, fires and raining frogs to get us off our furniture. I don't know...but.... the answer my friend, is blowin' in the wind.
I haven't heard any good new protest songs, but if you want satire and entertainment to temper your anger, check out Randy Rainbow on YouTube. His takes on the Orange One, using pop and Broadway songs, are brilliant.
Thanks Joan. I'm aware of Randy, but have not checked him out lately. Randy should have a show on Bravo. It seems that most of the good satire is coming from the late nite TV guys.

Hey Mike,
I thought of you. Here is a protest song from an "old favorite". She's still got "it".
