Peace Day
Nov 11
We officially call it Veterans Day now, it was changed to that in the 1950’s. Originally it was Armistice Day to honor the cease fire on the not so quiet Western Front at 11:00 AM, Nov 11, 1918. It was supposed to be the war that ended all wars.
The world leaders did not handle that “end of world war” concept too well and we were all back at it in just 20 years. It took an even larger, more deadly war and the invention and use of nuclear weapons to end that one.
Since 1945 we’ve been able to keep our nuclear weapons in their holsters…and when I say “we” I mean that universally around the globe…not just the US. We’ve come to the edge a few times and some “leaders” like to make threats and rattle sabres about using them.
But isn’t that kind of like the dionsaurs having a tailgate party and cheering on the comet to crash here ?
We’ve had dozens of smaller conflicts in many parts of the globe and the US has participated in many of them with weapons or boots on the ground.
If a genie gave me a wish this morning I’d say, “At 11:00 AM EST, I want everyone, all around the globe to go out in the street, hold hands with their neighbors, hug their kids and say ‘We won’t fight each other any more. It’s over. No more fights over borders, or religion, or oil.
If you old men want to beat each other up…then get in the ring and go for it.
We may watch you. But we are done. No more war orphans, or widows or crippled and dead soldiers. No more bombed out cities.’ “…..thats my wish on this Armistice/Veterans Day 2024.
Peace
