HBO's Deadwood is an entertaining view of this from an 1880's POV out on the edge of the realm. The combination of gold, the Chinese, Indians, George Hearst, along with the locals who struggle with the few black folks tells this story.
In the modern version, Malcolm McClean is an unwitting villain. He creates the first small containership to help him move goods up and down the east coast in the 60's. As in all things American, the ships get bigger, the containers get standardized and the race is on. By the 70's the first American containerships are going to Europe and back....and then they
start routes from California to Asia....and our big manufactures who make retail goods like Black & Decker can afford to ship enough here...and use cheap labor with no EPA...and that's the beginning of the end.
Up until the 70's Baltimore exported far more than it imported. That changed over the next decade. Combine that with WalMart and other big box stores who import over 90% of their goods and who killed downtowns everywhere...and there you find the real bad guys...who all live very well here.
Kevin Plank who founded Under Armour became one of them...and yes he did create a lot of good office jobs here in Baltimore for 20-30 year olds, and he sees himself as a GREAT American...but almost all of their goods come from Asia....he built a good strong business for 20 years....but now his stock price is $6...when it had a high over $60. So now he wants to/needs to sell his horse race farm.
