Cutting funding to PBS and firing Stephen Colbert in the same week seems to be having the opposite effect from what Trump wants. It’s not silencing them, it’s just amplifying how much the public respects both and how thin skinned Trump is about anything he perceives as criticism. It’s putting the spotlight directly where he does not want it…
These actions are just going to make it worse for him…because it’s all a form of censorship and attempted control of the message. What it’s doing is boosting fund raising at PBS and messages of support for their programing and opening up the gates for all comedians to target Trump and his desire to muzzle free speech.
Social media is full of support for Colbert and his work
and criticism of Paramount/CBS
Here’s some irony, the Smothers Brothers talking about being fired by CBS in 1969 on the Late Show with David Letterman.
History does repeat itself.
I hope.
Because the Smothers Brothers had a career that lasted as long as they wanted to perform…but the Viet Nam War ended after years of protest and Dick Nixon resigned in disgrace, when the media proved he WAS a crook.
So if CBS firing Colbert leads to Trump resigning in disgrace or being impeached out of office, I can live with that.
Power to the people…turn it up to 11
It would have been much easier to censor us in the past. There are way too many new "media" outlets now. CBS and the other alphabets are dinosaurs. Cable TV is in a spiral dive. Ad money is flocking to streaming.
I think of CBS as akin to AM radio.
Public broadcasting will only get stronger and Colbert? We know one of his writers. This crew is just getting started. They will create their own company and channel. Go ahead MAGA. This will be whackamole fun.
So yeah, we WILL turn up the volume. The more they try to squelch us the louder we will be!
I hope you're right, Mike. He needs to go sooner rather than later. It's only going to continue to get worse until Congress gets their heads out of their butts and stands up to him. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening anytime soon.
I read the Smothers Brothers book a few years ago. It was a great insight into the time and how politics ruled so many decisions. It was also amazing to see how many careers began because of being in that show.
